Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia


YAB Dato’ Seri Dr. Zahid Hamidi is the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia and also the Minister of Home Affairs. He began his first steps in politics as the Bagan Datoh Division Youth Chief in 1984. Between 1986 to 1993, YAB Dato’ Seri Zahid Hamidi served as the Political Secretary to current Malaysian Prime Minister, Dato’ Sri Najib Tun Razak, who was then the Youth Minister (1986-1990) and Defence Minister (1990-1995). He also served for a term as a Senator between 1991-1994. In 1995, Dato’ Seri Zahid Hamidi contested Malaysian General Election and won the the Bangan Datoh Parliamentary seat with an 80% majority. He was UMNO Youth Chief between 1996-1999 and Vice-President of UMNO for two terms between 2009-2011 and 2013-2016.

Dato’ Seri Zahid Hamidi also served as Deputy Minister of Tourism (2004-2006) and Deputy Minister of Communication (2006-2008). He began his first stint in the Malaysian Cabinet as the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in 2008-2009 under former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. He was also the Defence Minister between 2009-2013.

Before he began his illustrious career in politics, Dato’ Seri Zahid Hamidi had an equally outstanding career in the corporate world. He began as a Bank Officer at OCBC (1976-1977) before becoming an Assistant Manager in Bank Simpanan Nasional (1977-1979), and the Marketing Manager for Amanah Saham Nasional Berhad (1979-1984). He was also the Executive Director of Scandinavian Motors Sdn. Bhd. (1984-1990) and CEO of Kretam Corporation Berhad. YAB Dato’ Seri Zahid Hamidi also held chairmanships with Bank Simpanan Nasional, Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad, Seng Hup Berhad, Ramatex Berhad, and Tekala Corporation Berhad.

Dato’ Seri Zahid Hamidi holds a Bachelor of Arts (Economics & Malay Studies) from University Malaya, a Masters in Corporate Communication from Universiti Putra Malaysia, and a PhD in Communication from the same university. He is married to Datin Seri Hamidah Khamis and have been blessed with two daughters and three sons.
