Former Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand and Foreign Minister

Prof. Dr. Sathirathai was appointed the Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2001 serving the full four-year term before being appointed Deputy Prime Minister after the 2005 general elections and concurrently as Acting Minister of Culture in 2006. Between 2004-2006, he was the endorsed ASEAN candidate for the position of the United Nations Secretary-General. He had also been Minister of Finance in a previous government in 1995- July 1996 and was a policy adviser to several Thai Prime Ministers before then, dating back to 1988.

Professor Dr. Sathirathai received his Doctorate (S.J.D.) and Master of Law (LL.M.) from the Harvard Law School, after completing his Master of Law and Diplomacy (M.A.L.D.) at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, and Bachelor of Law (LL.B. Honours) at Chulalongkorn University. Professor Dr. Sathirathai has held academic positions in Chulalongkorn University, Brown University, and Harvard Law School.

At present, Professor Dr.Sathirathai is the Chairman of the Asian Peace and Reconciliation Council (APRC), Member of the Board of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA), President of the Asian Society of International Law (AsianSIL, 2014-2015), President of the Saranrom Institute of Foreign Affairs Foundation, Chancellor of Eastern Asia University and Chairman of the University Council of the Rajamangala University of Technology Isan. He is also a Member of the Honorary Council of the Institute for Global Law and Policy, Harvard Law School, U.S.A.

Professor Dr. Sathirathai has extensive experience in the corporate sector, having been Chairman of PTT Exploration and Production Plc. (PTTEP), Thai Oil Co., Ltd., and Laem Thong Bank Public Company Ltd., as well as board director in several other companies.

Professor Dr. Sathirathai’s publications include Third World Attitudes Toward International Law: An Introduction with Professor Frederick Snyder published by Marinus Nijhoff Publishers (1987), Thailand International Trade Law (Sasin Graduate Institute of Business Administration), and The Role of International Economic Law (in Thai, 2010). He has published articles in a number of academic journals such as the Harvard Journal of International Law, Malaya Law Review, and the Harvard Human Rights Journal.
